Original art shaped by place, experiences and stories

Heather Stewart is an Australian artist working mostly in watercolour and ink. Based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland her work is created slowly and intuitively. Whether painting in her home studio, en plein air or on her travels, the colours, textures, and atmosphere of the landscape and environment guide each piece. Marks of place often remain visible within the paintings, forming a quiet collaboration between artist and environment.

Inspired by her love of coastal environments, native flora, and the distinctive light of Australia and the tropics, Heather’s palette reflects the earthy golds, turquoise waters, indigo skies, and rich reds of country. Each work is an exploration of connection and stories. Her practice is grounded in observation and respect for place and time, and a deep appreciation for nature.

Each work is an exploration of connection — to land, memory, and the gentle rhythms of nature. Primarily, her work is in water colour and ink. Whilst not trying to replicate, my sense making comes through in what I call interpretive art - drawing on real elements to coalesce ideas, feelings and incorporating places, experiences and the stories. Based in Queensland, Australia, I call the Sunshine Coast home.
